Johnny Depp to Take Voice Test

Actor Johnny Depp is being required to take a voice test for a special role.

If the famous pirate from the film Pirates of the Caribbean tests well, he will a role in the Tim Burton musical drama Sweeney Todd.  The test will be done in front of composer Stephen Sondheim.

Sondheim, 76, is unsure that Depp is the right actor for the role.  He is concerned that his voice is too "rock and roll" for the part of Benjamin Barker.  Depp, who worked with musical groups beginning at the age of 13, is hoping to please the composer with his test.

Depp’s chances are good, particularly since he has worked in the past with Tim Burton in the film Corpse Bride.

A representative for Stephen Sondheim said, "He wants to make sure that all versions of his works are the best possible."
