According to the BBC News, Roberts, 39, has agreed to play the late environmentalist.
Roberts will also co-produce the project, which is yet to be titled.
The story will follow the life of Root, who worked on a series of successful wildlife documentaries around the world before her murder in Kenya in 2006.
Filming is set to begin in the beginning of 2008 in Africa.
