Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin work on Labor Day

Jason Reitman to write and direct film adaptation of Joyce Maynard novel.

Oscar-winning British actress Kate Winslet could soon be working under the direction of Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) alongside Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, True Grit), according to Entertainment Weekly.

The Reader actress is in negotiations for a role in Labor Day, adapted from Joyce Maynard’s novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Reitman.

The action takes place in the early 80s in a small New Hampshire town over the Labor Day weekend. A depressed single mom and her shy teenage son are approached by a bleeding stranger (Brolin) who asks for help. The man turns out to be an escaped convicted murderer, and the family is drawn in as they learn his true story.

The coming-of-age drama will begin filming next year in New England.

In the meantime, Kate Winslet shares the screen with Matt Damon and Jude Law in the Steven Soderbergh film Contagion due in theaters on October 21. Law and Winslet previously co-starred as brother and sister in the 2006 house-swapping romantic comedy The Holiday.
