Katy Perry nominated for 9 MTV Video Music Awards

Adele and Kanye West follow closely with seven nominations each.

Yesterday (July 20), U.S. television network MTV announced nominations for its upcoming 2011 Video Music Awards, reports Rolling Stone. This year the artist to watch is Katy Perry, with a total of nine nominations.

Her bestselling album Teenage Dream and accompanying videos have propelled her to the top, with nominations for video of the year and best female video for hit single Firework, best pop video for Last Friday Night (TGIF), and best collaboration for E.T. with Kanye West.

West sees his name appear in seven categories including best male video and best hip hop video for All of the Lights.

British singer Adele is also a favorite, collecting seven nominations, including video of the year and best female video for Rolling in the Deep.

YouTube sensation Justin Bieber only managed to snag one nomination this year: best male video for U Smile.

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
