Katy Perry wins big at MTV Video Music Awards

Firework named best video of the year.

Pop star Katy Perry was the big winner of the night at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards last night (August 28), where girl power was out in force.

Perry took home three Moonman statues, including the coveted video of the year award for her hit single Firework. She was also awarded best special effects and best collaboration, both for her duet with Kanye West on E.T.

"Now this is the time where you want to interrupt me, Kanye," Perry joked with West as they went up to accept the statue, referring to West’s controversial interjection during the 2009 awards ceremony.

Best male video went to Justin Bieber for U Smile, and best female video went to Lady Gaga for Born This Way. Nicki Minaj won best hip-hop video for Super Bass, Foo Fighters won best rock video for Walk, and Britney Spears won best pop video for ‘Till the World Ends. Spears was also awarded the prestigious Vanguard Award and was honored with a tribute performance.

Adele’s hit single Rollin’ in the Deep also took home a number of awards, including best art direction, best cinematography and best editing.
