Lady Gaga rules VMAs

The pop star wins an impressive eight awards, including video of the year for Bad Romance.

Lady Gaga ruled the MTV Video Music Awards held last night (September 12) at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

The pop sensation was nominated in a whopping 13 categories and came out on top in eight. She picked up the most coveted award of the evening, Video of the Year, for her song Bad Romance. Gaga was handed the award by another pop icon, Cher, dressed in that now infamous outfit from her If I Could Turn Back Time video.

Even though it was no big surprise that Gaga swept the awards, she nonetheless showed a lot of emotion when accepting her statues. She repeatedly thanked her fans, her "little monsters" as she calls them, for supporting her.

Rapper Eminem kicked off the evening with a performance of Not Afraid, accompanied by an orchestra and a chorus of gospel singers and drummers. He was later joined by Rihanna for a few lines of their hit Love the Way You Lie.

Eminem won two awards last night, including Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video.

Canadian Justin Bieber won Best New Artist in a category that is voted on by fans up until the last minute before the winner is announced.

Both Taylor Swift and Kanye West performed at this year’s show. The two singers apparently met backstage and held a secret meeting in Swift’s dressing room to talk about the scandal from last year.

Kanye West is back on top after disgracing himself during last year’s show. He closed out the evening with a performance of his new song, Runaway.
