Lane Hutson offered more money (but agreed to take less)

Lane Hutson is a guy who likes to win. He wanted to sign a big contract in Montreal because he sees himself lifting the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens. And to do that, he decided to take less money when he signed his new contract.
Lane Hutson was
offered
more but signed for less. He bought himself security and bought the Habs a bit more room to continue building a championship-caliber team. He wants to win. He could’ve held out for more and could’ve waited much longer. Not doing that says a lot about him

Lane Hutson could’ve gone for the big money. He could’ve told Kent Hughes that he wanted as much money as possible to secure his future financially and he could’ve been greedy in his demands. But that didn’t happen and the culture in Montreal is one of the reasons why. When you see guys like Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky doing the same, it also helps… [content-ads] In the end, it will give Kent Hughes more room to maneuver.
The Canadiens’ GM will have more money to improve his team, and by seeing Hutson take less money, it also sends a message to the rest of the group: we’re not here to fool around. That’s the right attitude, and it also shows how much Hutson is a guy who takes his team’s success to heart. I’ll repeat the first sentence of my text: he likes to win. And he went out of his way to help the club at that level because he knew he could get more money. Good for the Habs, honestly.

It could also dictate what happens next for guys like Zachary Bolduc and Ivan Demidov, who will have to sign a new contract at some point. That said, Hutson isn’t the first to accept less money in order to stay in town. And he probably won’t be the last either… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Me too.
I am a bit surprised at how low the Lane Hutson deal ended up at, considering it’s less than both Jackson LaCombe and Luke Hughes, at 8.85M (and he’ll earn less than Noah Dobson, as well)
GM Kent Hughes has done well in locking up most of his new core reasonably. #Habs– Brennan Klak (@nhlupdate) October 13, 2025
