Lane Hutson has been making eyes glaze over ever since he was selected in the second round by the Montreal Canadiens last year.
He is coming off an excellent first season in the NCAA with Boston University, with 49 points in 38 games.
But beyond his stats, it’s his ability on skates that is mind-boggling. Not only can he outwit players with disconcerting agility, he also has a very good skating stroke.
He’s produced a few gems at the most recent international championships, earning him an invitation to the Biosteel camp, in partnership with the NHL.

The camp brings together 30 NHL players for intense training sessions and friendly competition.
The group includes Leon Draisaitl, Connor Bedard, Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Nathan MacKinnon.
What’s special is that during on-ice drills, Hutson was paired with Cale Makar, the Avalanche’s excellent defenseman.
What’s most interesting is that the players’ playing styles have always been compared. We often hear that Hutson is a smaller Cale Makar, so it’s nice to see them playing together.
One thing’s for sure, Makar has paved the way for defenders with his type of talent, and Hutson is taking advantage of it to quietly climb the ladder too. He’s about to play another season at university, which could well be his last. He will certainly be a mainstay of the American team at the next World Junior Hockey Championship.
Note that he’s not the only defenseman at this camp, as Justin Barron has also been invited. The CH right-handed defenseman will be looking to break into the line-up once again this season, despite the fact that his blossoming has yet to come to fruition.
Last year, he collected 15 points in 39 games with the big club, and added six in the AHL.
