Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn to star in The Revenant?

Biutiful director in talks with actors for film adaptation.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn are in talks with Biutiful director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for the two lead roles in the wilderness revenge drama The Revenant, based on the novel by Michael Punke, reports Deadline.

Originally, Christian Bale had been approached for the lead role of fur trapper Hugh Glass, however, it now appears that Leonardo DiCaprio may be the actor to play a man who is horribly mauled by a grizzly bear, then robbed and left for dead by the two men, one to be played by Penn, who were supposed to be helping him.

Amazingly, Glass survives and upon his recovery is hell-bent on revenge. Babel director Innaritu hopes to start filming in the fall of 2012.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars alongside Naomi Watts in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar in theaters on November 9. He also recently completed filming for The Great Gatsby with Carey Mulligan, which is due out December 25, 2012.

Sean Penn is awaiting a release date for the drama This Must Be the Place and also stars in Gangster Squad with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, in theaters on October 19, 2012.
