Lindsay Lohan pleads not guilty to theft

Mean Girls star pleads not guilty to felony grand theft charge.

Yesterday (February 9), Mean Girls actress Lindsay Lohan pleaded not guilty to grand theft for allegedly stealing a $2,500 necklace from a California jewelry store in January, reports People. Currently free on bail, Lohan denies stealing the necklace, and claims she thought she was allowed to borrow the jewelry.

Superior Court judge Keith L. Schwartz revoked Lohan’s probation in a 2007 drunken driving case, and instead issued a $20,000 bond for the theft charge and an additional $20,000 bond for the probation revocation.

At her arraignment, the judge warned the starlet that she could to jail if she violates the law. “I’m trying to put this as polite as possible because of all the media interest here,” said the judge. “You’re in a different situation now that a felony has been filed against you…if you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail.”

“A felony is a different situation, and you’re not entitled to bail,” he repeated. “You need to follow the law like everybody else… everyone in this room has to follow the law…you’re no different than anyone else – so please don’t push your luck.”

When Schwartz asked Lohan if she understood, she simply replied, “Yes, sir.” Her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said her client would like to negotiate a plea deal. Holley said Lohan’s probation officer recently told her the actress has been in compliance, and has not failed any drug tests. Responding to a request from the district attorney, the judge also forbade Lohan from contacting the owners of the jewelry store, as they were recently alarmed at receiving flowers from Lohan’s reps.

The starlet arrived at the courthouse and walked through the media gauntlet looking calm and healthy wearing a short, form-fitting white dress and her hair loosely pulled back. The next hearing is scheduled for February 23. The star is also under investigation for assaulting an employee at the rehab centre she attended.
