Link between omega imbalance and obesity

The next generation can be affected by an imbalanced consumption of omega-3 and omega-6.

For some time now, researchers have demonstrated the beneficial health effects of omega-3 and omega-6. But French researchers discovered that an imbalance in their consumption increases the risk of obesity over several generations.

On average, Westerners consume 15 omega-6 products to 1 omega-3. The Journal of Lipid Research reports that experts recommend a ratio of 5 to 1.

According to Dr. Gerard Aihaud and colleagues at the University of Nice, this huge gap can lead to obesity carrying over from one generation to the next. Dr. Aihaud commented: "This is the first time that we have shown a trans-generational increase in obesity linked to omega intake… Omega six is like a fat-producing bomb."

These omegas are essential to maintaining a healthy body. Omega-3 can found in flaxseed, walnuts and fatty fish like salmon while omega-6 is in vegetable oils, seeds, grains like corn, as well as eggs.
