Link between pregnancy and breast cancer

Link established between pregnancy and breast cancer.

Experts from the French Society of Breast Pathology and Senology, whose theme this year focuses on young women facing breast cancer, gathered this week in Strasbourg.

Researchers found 0.1 per cent of women, or 700-800 cases per year, were diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy. As women continue to have their first child at an older age, that number is expected to grow.

Since a woman’s risk of breast cancer increases with age, and the age of first-time mothers is also increasing, the group is searching for solutions to treat these unique patients.

The society suggests the creation of a reference centre to guide physicians dealing with cases of breast cancer in pregnant women, with the goal to provide consistent support to both doctors and patients throughout the process.
