London museum hosts Miro exhibit

First major retrospective of Spanish master in 50 years at Tate Modern in April.

In April 2011, the Tate Modern museum in London will be hosting an important exhibit: the first major retrospective in 50 years dedicated to artist Joan Miro.

Entitled Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape, the exhibition traces the turbulent times of the renowned Spanish surrealist painter. Working in Barcelona and Paris, Miró tracked the mood of the Spanish Civil War and the first months of the Second World War in France.

Under the political restrictions of Franco’s Spain, Miró’s grand abstract paintings of the late 1960s and early 1970s became an international symbol of resistance and integrity.

Running from April 14 to September 11, 2011, the exhibition showcases more than 150 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints from across six decades of the artist’s extraordinary career.
