Lotus Updates the Esprit

Known as the car that could convert into a submarine in the James Bond flick, The Spy Who Loved Me, the Lotus Esprit was a highlight of the 80s and 90s. The automaker now wants to update its icon.

Rumours of the new Lotus Esprit in the making keep invading specialty sites. This time, Britain’s Autocar reports that the brand has been given the green light.

However, it seems that the idea has been coming into fruition. The new CEO of Lotus, Danny Bahr, recently revealed his goal of preparing the company to rival the Porsche and Ferrari heavyweights.

Lotus wants to add a third tier to its range, a vehicle that would contend with the Audi A8 and Ferrari 458. With the triple proposal Elise/Exige/Europa at the lower end, and the Evora in mid-range, Lotus would then have a complete and interesting line-up.

Aside from the new project, the engineers at the Hethel plant are developing the platform for the Evora, called the VVA. Lotus hopes to sell the base structure to a niche market for half the price. Lotus is also working on 8 hybrid and electric projects for other brands.

More details will unfold when Danny Bahr reveals his plan for the next 7 years.
