Madame Tussauds opens museum in Vienna

Waxworks attraction to open later this year.

Famous waxworks attraction Madame Tussauds is set to open its 11th museum in Vienna later this year.

Costing almost $16 million to build, the new museum is expected to house about 70 wax figures, and will include native Austrians Freud, Einstein, Mozart, Hayden and Strauss alongside the usual pop and political figures like Brad Pitt and Barack Obama that the attraction is known for.

The museum will be built in the historic Prater public park, a central and popular area of Vienna which already attracts at least 3 million visitors a year.

"It will be our fourth site in Europe after London, Berlin and Amsterdam, and we could not have wished for a better location in this beautiful city," said Glenn Earlam, managing director for Merlin Entertainments Midway which owns Madame Tussauds.

"We will be working closely with both Prater Services, and our new landlords … to create a stunning attraction which we believe will be a “must-do” place for everyone visiting Vienna."
