Madonna sells Leger painting for $7.2 million

Madonna has sold her painting by French artist Fernand Leger for $7,2 million, which she is donating to her Ray of Light foundation to support girls’ education in more deprived areas of the world.

Madonna has sold her Fernand Leger painting for $7.2 million – which she will give to charity.

The ‘Girls Gone Wild’ hitmaker first bought the Cubist piece, titled ‘Three Women at the Red Table’, for $3.4 million in 1990 but decided to auction it off to raise money for her Ray of Light Foundation.

Madonna is thrilled the artwork sold for so much when it was put under the hammer by Sotheby’s in New York on Tuesday (07.05.13), and the proceeds will be used to educate underprivileged girls.

Sharing her excitement on Facebook, Madonna, 54, wrote: "Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!"

Sotheby’s stated the proceeds from the sale "will benefit Madonna’s Ray of Light Foundation, supporting girls’ education projects in the Middle East and South Asia".

This massive donation is the latest in a long line of charitable deeds the pop superstar has carried in recent years.

Madonna – who is a patron of Children of Peace – also has her own organization Raising Malawi, which she founded with Michael Berg after she adopted her son David, seven, from an orphanage in the district of Mchinji.

She recently flew back to the African nation with her son and adopted daughter Mercy, eight, for the first time in two years after making a promise to the court to visit the children’s homeland "every two or three years" following her the little girl’s adoption in 2009.
