Marc Bergevin: His roommate got his money’s worth when he brought a girl home

Do you know Mick Vukota? We’re talking about a former player of the Canadiens (22 games in 1997-1998), Lightning and New York Islanders. That’s where he spent the majority of his 573 NHL games.

When he was in New York, he had a condo early in his career. And at a certain point, he found himself without a roommate.

That’s when Marc Bergevin came to the Islanders. That’s when Vukota offered to move in with him, in his empty room, and Bergevin accepted.

A beautiful friendship developed between the two men, but Bergevin still considered leaving his friend’s condo. Why would he do this? Because, as Vukota told the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Bergevin didn’t get along with his roommate’s girlfriend.

What you need to know is that the Western Canadian native had been with his blonde for a short time and had invited her to stay at his place because he was lonely. He didn’t seem to be in love over his head.

Bergevin told him that the two guys had a great relationship, but that the girl had to go. And so it happened.

The next day, on my way back from practice, I booked her [his girlfriend] a flight. I never saw her again. – Mick Vukota

Bergevin and his roommate got along well, and to this day, Vukota maintains that he has an excellent relationship with Bergevin. He clearly didn’t feel pressured to do anything.

They clearly had fun together.

Bergevin, on the other hand, was more the type who wouldn’t hang on to just one woman. In the same podcast, Vukota recounts how Bergevin always brought home the most beautiful women in town.

Remember: when we say the prettiest girls in town, we have to remember that they weren’t playing in Buffalo either.

All this to say that in the late evening, Vukota was often in the living room watching the sports news. And whenever the Quebecer had a visitor, Bergevin made sure not to forget his good friend.

And how did he do that?

Vukota recounts that the girl in question would always leave Bergevin’s room, make a tour of the apartment before returning to the bedroom for the rest of the evening.

And the next morning, Bergy would say this:

Did you enjoy the victory lap? Bergevin to Vukota

Clearly, we knew Bergevin liked to have fun as a player. In particular, he was known to be quite a prankster when he was a player… unlike his last two years as GM of the Habs.

But now we know even more.

In bursts

– The parallels are striking.

– It had to be something.

– Mentalities are changing.

– Still.

– This is not courteous.
