March is carnival month in Brazil

Rio, Sao Paulo, Salvador de Bahia and Recife all come to life for carnival season.

As host of the largest event of its kind in the world each year and attracting tourists from around the world, most people think of Rio de Janeiro when they think of Brazilian carnivals.

But Rio is not the only Brazilian city holding a carnival – Sao Paulo, Salvador de Bahia and Recife have all capitalized on the celebration to offer tourists the chance to dance into the night.

Rio Carnival will take place this year from March 4 to 8, at the same time Sao Paulo gets celebrations underway from March 5 to 8. Salvador de Bahia offers an added day of festivities, running from March 3 until March 8.

The smallest carnival, in Recife, from March 4 to 8 March and offers the rhythmic sounds of Frevo and Maracatu. Also, many elaborately-costumed dance groups take to the streets to celebrate carnivals.
