Meet the ghosts of Ottawa

Canada’s capital comes alive with spirits and specters this Halloween.

From now until October 31, Haunted Walks in Ottawa, Ontario is offering a special Halloween season of ghost walks in the nation’s capital.

Offered in both English and French, three different tours are available, with departure times running from about 6 p.m. until 10 p.m each evening.

Are You Afraid of the Dark – Ghost and Gallows (Halloween Version) explores the story surrounding the murder of Thomas D’Arcy McGee, including a visit inside the old Carleton County Jail where accused murderer Patrick Whelan was hanged for the crime. Visitors will navigate the jail’s haunted hallways in darkness, guided only by lantern light.

A Haunted Night at the Museum of Nature invites visitors inside one of Ottawa’s most haunted buildings. The tour takes place outside of the museum’s usual operating hours, guaranteeing a spooky walk through the deserted building.

"Canada’s Scariest Stories" – The Original Haunted Walk (Halloween Version) is a more traditional outdoor ghost walk, with scheduled stops at several haunted locations, including the Bytown Museum.

Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes. Tickets – which cost $17.75 for adults and $16.75 for students and seniors – can be booked online or in person, but must be purchased in advance.
