According to Orange News, Gibson missed the birth because he was in another part of the country.
Oksana Grigorieva gave birth to Lucia on October 30 in Los Angeles, though she was not expected to deliver the baby until December.
The singer admitted that she was somewhat surprised when the baby came early, because Gibson was shooting a film in New York and she was home alone when her labour started. Grigorieva explained, "She was almost a month early. I was at home and then I got rushed to hospital, and then eight hours later, I could look at her beautiful face. It was fairly straightforward, as births go. It happened very quickly. He (Gibson) came a few hours later because he had to fly from New York… He is ecstatic. He is in love with her already."
Little Lucia is Gibson’s eighth child. He has six sons and a daughter from his previous marriage. Grigorieva has a son from her relationship with actor Timothy Dalton.
