Meryl Streep wants another hefty role

Meryl Streep is in talks to play "The Iron Lady" on the big screen.

Meryl Streep is considered to be one of the greatest living actresses. The Hollywood Reporter reveals she has set her sights on a new role. She is in talks to play Margaret Thatcher.

Film backers Pathe Films and Film4 released a joint statement yesterday (July 1): "We can confirm Meryl Streep has expressed interest in playing the role of Margaret Thatcher. Discussions are under way with her representatives. But no agreement is in place. The film is scheduled to shoot at the end of the year."

The film will revolve around the 17-day build-up to the Falkland War between Britain and Argentina in 1982.

Academy Award-winning British actor Jim Broadbent (Iris) is in talks to play her husband, Denis.

If Streep does play the former British PM, she will team up again with director Phyllida Lloyd. They worked on Mamma Mia! together and that film grossed more than $600 million in 2008.

Pathe described the film: "It tells the story of a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world."
