Mia Wasikowska and Vera Farmiga in film adaptation

Two actresses join Anthony LaPaglia in new film adaptation of A View from the Bridge.

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) will join Anthony LaPaglia in a new film adaptation of the Arthur Miller play A View from the Bridge, reports Variety.

Set in a 1950s Italian neighbourhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, the play tells the story of Italian longshoreman Eddie Carbone (LaPaglia), his wife, Beatrice, and Catherine, the orphaned niece they are raising.

LaPaglia was able to secure the film rights and Miller’s approval after starring in the 1998 Broadway production for which he won a Tony Award for the role of Eddie Carbone. He will also produce the film along with Marion Pilowsky and Natalie Stevenson.

Sam Neill and Sebastian Stan will complete the casting. Robert Connolly (The Bank, Balibo) is directing the film, which starts shooting in June in Melbourne. The first film adapted from the play was directed by Sidney Lumet in 1962.

The proposed remake has been circulating for some time now, and previously, Frances McDormand and Scarlett Johansson were involved in the project.

Mia Wasikowska will be starring with Michael Fassbender in the romantic drama Jane Eyre on March 11. Vera Farmiga will share the screen with Jake Gyllenhaal in Source Code on April 1.
