Montreal museum welcomes wine lovers

To Your Health, Caesar! Wine and the Gauls exhibit opens at Pointe-à-Callière museum.

Wine lovers will want to check out the newest exhibit, To Your Health, Caesar! Wine and the Gauls,  opening today (May 18) at Pointe-à-Callière, the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History.

Almost 200 items are on display, illustrating the history of wine from its earliest origins to its current popularity, with a special focus on the birth of winemaking in Gaul (present-day France).

Running through to October 16, the exhibit will include rare objects and masterpieces borrowed from private collections and international institutions – including the world-renowned Louvre Museum in Paris.

Along with examining winemaking methods over the centuries, visitors will learn about the varied uses of wine, both sacred and secular, as they travel along the exhibit’s "wine road" that winds its way through history.

“Wine is a timeless beverage with a fascinating past," said Francine Lelièvre, Executive Director of Pointe-à-Callière. "It has come down to us through the ages, and is still part of our customs and everyday lives. Whether you are a wine or a history buff, you are sure to find the exhibition intriguing."
