More Japanese restaurants star in Michelin guide

Five more Japanese restaurants earn three stars in latest French restaurant guide.

The Michelin Guide, one of the most popular travel guides in the world, particularly its classification of restaurants, continues to develop the territory of Japan.

Last year’s guide listed seven three-star restaurants for the cities of Kyoto and Osaka. This year’s upcoming edition to be published October 22 in Japan, will add five more restaurants to the guide.

The special three-star rating means exceptional cuisine worth a special trip. Two stars are for excellent cooking, worth a detour; and one star denotes a very good restaurant.

Regardless of country or city, five criteria are used for awarding stars: product quality, preparation and flavours, the chef’s personality as revealed through his or her cuisine, value for money, and consistency of quality over time and across the entire menu.

The Michelin Guide was originally developed by the French tiremaker to promote automobile travel. The English edition of this guide will be available on February 1, 2011.
