More risks for asthmatics

Asthmatics have a greater risk of suffering from other diseases.

A new study recently published in the journal Thorax concludes asthma affects our whole body. People who suffer from asthma visit their doctor and hospitals emergency rooms more often to seek treatment for unrelated health problems.

The Canadian medical community looked at why asthmatics are more likely to have to deal with multiple diseases than those who do not have asthma.

Andrea Gershon is a scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto. She is also a respirologist and scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and lead author of the study.

She commented: "I think it tells us asthma is not only a disease of the lungs, it affects the rest of the body. I think we need to start thinking bigger when we think about asthma."

Globe Life reports: "The study was conducted using health databases of Ontario residents in 2005."
