More single women choosing artificial insemination

More and more women giving up on finding Mr. Right.

More and more single women have given up searching for Mr. Right, and are choosing to look for sperm donors online at websites like babydonor.com and co-parent-search.com, reports the Daily Mail.

Young women are tired of waiting for the right man, and have decided to face parenthood alone. According to The Sunday Times, women under 25 make up a quarter of those who register on these sites. They will post their photograph with private information that allows potential donors to get in touch.

One 20-year-old said: “I’ve wanted kids for as long as I can remember. I lost a baby when I was with my ex-boyfriend. We broke up shortly afterwards, too devastated to continue. But since then I have known I am ready to be a parent. I am financially secure, I have found a job with flexible hours, I have a house and a mortgage. I know I could offer a child a loving, safe environment, so I don’t know why I should wait.”

It used to be that having a child meant waiting to find the right man and falling in love, said U.K. professor Christina Hughes, “Now there is an emphasis on women waiting until the time is right to have children. Even though these women are young, they believe that they have the support structure and feel emotionally and financially independent: for them it is the right time.”

Since the cost of fertility treatments can be very expensive, authorities warn women who choose to go the unregulated route that there are legal and health implications from using donors outside of licensed clinics. Sperm gained over the Internet cannot be screened properly, and the donor still has legal status as the father.
