More Sleep May Decrease Weight Gain

Children and teens that sleep longer are less likely to gain weight.

A new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, shows that it is beneficial to let young people sleep longer on weekends and holidays.

Hong Kong researchers found that children who slept less had an increased tendency to gain weight. Their study also showed that for those who cannot sleep eight hours per night during the week, they can compensate during the weekends and holidays. This would also help to maintain a healthy weight.

This study confirms previous research that has linked sleep deprivation with obesity in children. Researchers do not know the reason why some children and teens sleep less. These children also spend more time doing homework and watching television than children with normal weight.

Researchers added that biological factors may also play a role in the sleep cycle and therefore the results should be taken with caution. It is already known that an irregular sleep schedule can lead to learning difficulties and mood disorders.
