Museums unite to chronicle L.A. art scene

60 California museums tell the story of post-war L.A. art scene.

More than 60 cultural institutions in California have joined forces to offer an impressive retrospective of Los Angeles art created after the end of the Second World War.

Entitled Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A 1945-1980, simultaneous exhibits and programs will run throughout museums in southern California from 2011 to 2012.

Each museum will make its own contribution to the story of art and social change that has emanated from the progressive state known as a mecca for the entertainment industry.

This unique event was initiated by the J. Paul Getty Trust, which has contributed to the project with more than $10 million in grants and scholarships to various participating institutions.

Visitors can admire post-war California architecture, Pop Art, the emergence of African-American artists and 1979s feminist performance art.

The event will begin in October 2011 and will run through April 2012 at locations including Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Palm Springs.
