New antiquities museum for Suez City

Suez National Museum of Antiquities explores history of the Egyptian city and canal.

A new museum has opened in Suez City, dedicated to telling the history of the Egyptian city and the Suez Canal, reports Routard.

The Suez National Museum of Antiquities officially opened last week, showcasing almost 7,000 years worth of regional history – from the prehistoric era to modern times.

Over 1,500 antiquities are on display in the 5,950-square-meter institution, which also includes a VIP lounge, 100-seat auditorium, and a cafeteria.

The second floor of the two-storey museum is dedicated to the Suez Canal, exploring its history and development over the years. On display are a collection of artifacts and statues of ancient Egyptian rulers who helped to construct and protect the canal, as well as paintings and maps that detail the canal’s history.

The exhibit includes a display on the Sesostris Canal, the Suez Canal’s predecessor, built during the reign of King Senusret III (1878-1840 BC) to link the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea through the Nile River.
