New exhibit at Montreal’s McCord Museum

OIL by photographer Edward Burtynsky opens today.

The McCord Museum in downtown Montreal opens a new exhibit today (October 6) that explores the effects and influence of petroleum on modern life. OIL – which runs until January 8, 2012 – features the works of renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky.

"This impressive collection of 56 large colour photographs explores the subject of oil, the much maligned natural resource that has defined the world as we know it," explains the museum website.

"The vast landscapes shown in the photographs provide us with rarely seen glimpses of oil production and distribution, oil fields, oil sands, and oil refineries."

The exhibit opens tonight with a talk by the artist. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the museum is offering free admission to the discussion (space permitting), which will be presented in English with French commentary.

Guided tours are offered throughout the exhibit’s run: on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
