New Jean Cocteau museum opening in France

Jean Cocteau Museum opens this November in Menton.

After two years of construction, the Jean Cocteau Museum (le Musée Jean Cocteau) opens this November in Menton, France, reports Routard.

Situated on the French Riviera, the museum has finally completed its collection thanks to American collector Severin Wunderman, a fan of the artist who has donated 1,800 pieces to the museum, including 990 works by Cocteau.

The new museum features a complete representation of Cocteau’s portfolio, beginning with his earliest self-portraits from 1910 through to his Mediterranean period at the end of his life in 1963.

The multi-talented Cocteau worked in a variety of media, including art, film and design, as well as writing novels, poetry and plays. He was a contemporary and associate of other famed artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Hugo, Édith Piaf and Coco Chanel.

While in Menton, fans and art lovers can also visit the Bastion, a Cocteau museum already in operation, dedicated to the artist’s work between 1950 and 1963.
