New Lacoste line features reusable shopping bags

French fashion house expands crocodile theme.

French fashion house Lacoste is expanding its line with the addition of the R George collection, reports FashionMag.

The collection includes five different styles of bag, including three sizes of a shopper-style bag in canvas and leather, a folding canvas bag and a tote in canvas and leather, along with a number of purses and pouches.

Bags in the collection will feature a stylized version of the famous Lacoste logo. No longer just a small embroidered patch, the crocodile logo has been blown up into a into a camouflage print which covers much of the bag.

The line is named after Robert George, a friend of the brand’s founder René Lacoste. George, a fashion designer, designed the original Lacoste logo in the 1920s, based upon his friend’s nickname, le Crocodile.

Lacoste, a famous tennis player, asked George to embroider the emblem onto his white blazer, which Lacoste then wore proudly before the start of each of his tennis matches.

In 1927, Lacoste began making his own cotton shirts for use during matches, finding that a loose knit was better for coping with the heat of American summers. The shirts became popular with other players, and the Lacoste brand – and its iconic logo – were born.
