New music this week

A quiet week in new music kicks off 2011.

The biggest news in this week’s new releases is Cake’s latest offering, Showroom of Compassion, the alt rock band’s sixth full-length album. This is their first release since 2004’s Pressure Chief, making this the longest gap between Cake albums.

Produced in the band’s solar-powered recording studio, it is the first Cake album to come out under their own label, Upbeat Records. With a total of 11 tracks, the first official single, Sick of You, peaked at number four on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart.

Also out this week is the newest release from Cage the Elephant, Thank You Happy Birthday, a follow up to the 2008 debut album, the self-titled Cage the Elephant.

The album’s first single, Shake Me Down, was released on Record Store Day Black Friday (November 26) as a special 7" vinyl with download, available only to participating independent retailers. "Record Store Day" is a collaborative project between independently-owned music retailers and musicians. For the album’s release, a special lithograph will be available with purchase at participating retailers, reports Record Store Day.
