New study on the effects of smoking while pregnant

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of psychiatric disorders.

We already knew that women who smoke during pregnancy expose their unborn child to various problems.

Smoking affects the developing baby’s breathing, and can cause asthma and ear infections. As well, a woman who smokes is two times less likely to get pregnant and men who smoke see their sperm quality affected. Smoking during pregnancy also increases the risk of premature birth and low birth weight babies. The risk of sudden infant death doubles as well.

Now, a new study reveals that pregnant women who smoke expose their children to psychiatric disorders.

Children and adults who were exposed to smoking while they were in the womb consume more psychotropic drugs such as antidepressants and sleeping pills. It seems that girls are more affected than boys by these disorders.
