News March 4 – R.E.M. recruits 12 different directors for album videos

Actor James Franco is one of many guest directors for Collapse Into Now videos.

The Collapse Into Now Film Project was personally curated by R.E.M. frontman Micheal Stipe and will feature a series of guest directors for a series of short films that will accompany each track on the band’s new album Collapse Into Now, reports NME.com.

The group’s fifteenth studio album will be released next Tuesday, March 8. The film project features a variety of artists including actor James Franco, artist and director Taylor-Wood and Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles.

"It was a way of presenting the idea of an album in 2011, beyond a music fan’s idea of an album 20 years ago,” Stipe told NME. “The way technology is right now, it’s possible to present something in any way you want to. I basically wanted to explore the idea of what is an album, and how do we present it with everything that we have available. “

"I like the opportunities the 21st century have provided for presenting work in a different way."
