Trinidadian-born rapper Nicki Minaj’s quick climb to the top of the music charts has won her the 2011 ‘Rising Star’ award from Billboard magazine.

Minaj will receive the award at the sixth annual ‘Women in Music’ awards on December 2 in New York. Singer Taylor Swift will also be honored with the Billboard woman of the year award.

"I am deeply honored to be recognized by Billboard," Minaj said in a statement. "My nation of Barbz and I have come a mighty long way; yet we are nowhere close to where God will take us. Sit back and enjoy the ride."

Since her debut album Pink Friday launched in November 2010, Minaj has broken several records, released a number of hit singles, and toured with top music acts. At the recent American Music Awards, she won several awards, including favorite hip hop/rap artist and album.

"Nicki Minaj has established herself as a force in hip hop and pop music, and we’re thrilled to recognize her accomplishments over the past year by honoring her as this year’s ‘Rising Star,’” said Bill Werde, editorial director. “Her unique style and powerful sound will undoubtedly lead to a long and lustrous career, and we look forward to seeing where she goes and what she does next."

In winning this award, Minaj follows in the footsteps of Jazmine Sullivan , Lady Gaga and Colbie Caillat. Earlier this week, Minaj announced via Twitter that her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was currently in the works to be released on Valentine’s Day 2012.
