Nike steps into the future

Limited edition fundraising shoe inspired by Back to the Future.

Last Friday (September 9), Nike announced a special, limited-edition run of shoes inspired by Marty McFly’s futuristic footwear in Back to the Future II, reports Le Blog Luxe.

One-hundred and fifty pairs of the hi-tech shoes, dubbed MAGS, are being sold daily through online auction site Ebay, with all proceeds going to actor Michael J. Fox’s foundation to "erase Parkinson’s disease from the space-time continuum." Nike produced a total of just 1,500 pairs of the unique sneakers, and all will be auctioned off by September 18.

The idea for MAG’s first emerged in the late ’80s when Back To The Future director Robert Zemeckis contacted head Nike shoe developer, Tinker Hatfield. Then in 2007, fans launched a grassroots campaign named McFly2015, imploring Nike to consider manufacturing the replica shoes.

As featured in the 1989 flick, the shoes contain a rechargeable battery to power LED lights for up to five hours at a time. Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, are matching all donations generated by the shoes up to $50 million.
