November 11, 2009 – Retirees in Good Health

Retirees are in better shape in the years that follow their departure from the workplace.

Retirees are reported to be in better health in the years following their retirement.

According to the British magazine, The Lancet, researchers of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) evaluated 14,000 people seven years before their retirement and then seven years after.

They were asked to evaluate their health by giving a rate between 1(very good) and 7 (very bad).  Before retirement, 20% of the surveyed said to be in bad health.  After their retirement, only 14% claimed to be in bad health.

A year after leaving their working career, people rediscovered the health that they had ten years before their retirement.

The effect was especially evident in people who found their work conditions unfavourable, such as physically or physiologically demanding, or those that were dissatisfied in their job.  To the retiree, there is thus less strain.

However, it is not believed to be harmful to work after 55 years, we need only to adjust the environment. After all, it has been proven that people who remained active have better health than those who do nothing.
