Ontario beach listed in American top 5

Bayfield Main Beach on Lake Huron named one of five best Great Lakes beaches.

An American beach expert who bills himself as Dr. Beach has ranked Bayfield Main Beach in Ontario among the top five Great Lakes beaches in North America, reports Canoe Travel.

Dr. Beach – whose real name is Stephen Leatherman – has become something of an expert on beaches. Since 1991, he has published an annual report on the best American seacoast beaches. This year is the first time he’s applied his rankings to the inland beaches of the Great Lakes.

Bayfield Main Beach on Lake Huron came in fourth on the list – the only Canadian beach to make the grade.

"The small village of Bayfield on Lake Huron boasts of being a Blue Flag beach, signifying its environmental quality and services," explains the Dr. Beach official website.

"There are amenities close to the beach, and crowds are never a concern at this remote beach."

Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on the shores of Lake Michigan took the top prize, followed by Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie, and Michigan’s Sand Point Beach on Lake Superior rounding out the top three.

Illinois’s Oak Street Beach on Lake Michigan came behind Bayfield in fifth place.
