Ontario Parks perfect for fall getaway

Admire the fall foliage … and celebrate Halloween!

Enjoying the last of the warm weather before the snow flies, taking in the beautiful fall foliage, and gearing up for Halloween are just a few North American autumn traditions.

Onatrio Parks has planned some unique programs that tie autumn traditions to their education programs.

Located on the northeast shore of Lake Erie, 900 campers are expected at Turkey Point’s Halloween celebration this year on October 8. Families dress up in costume for pumpkin-carving and a visit to the picnic shelter which has been transformed into a haunted house.

Rock Point Provincial Park at the east end of Lake Erie, is a peninsula park that was once a coral reef 350 million years ago. Halloween events are planned for Saturday, October 8, and park staff will dispel some of the myths and behaviors associated with bats. Free pumpkins will be handed out for campers to carve and to post at their campsite for Saturday night trick or treaters. A campfire costume party is also planned.

Port Burwell Provincial Park is a favorite haunt for birdwatchers. Every year, thousands of hawks pass through the park. One of the best places for hawk-watching is the park beach.

Although Long Point Provincial Park does not celebrate Halloween, it is home to the Graveyard of the Great Lakes, due to a massive ship graveyard that lies at the end of the massive sandspit in the park.
