Oslo is the most expensive city in the world

Norwegian city tops international rankings for cost-of-living.

Oslo, Norway is the most expensive place to live in the world this year, according to a survey of 122 goods and services across 73 countries, compiled by international financial services firm UBS in their annual Prices and Earnings report.

Oslo was followed in the rankings by Zurich and Geneva, both in Switzerland. Copenhagen, Denmark came fourth with Stockholm, Sweden rounding out the top five.

At the other end of the spectrum, Cairo, Egypt; Nairobi, Kenya; Delhi, India; Manilla, Philippines; and Mumbai, India were the five cheapest places to live this year.

The weak U.S. dollar has caused the world currencies to rise, bringing up the comparative cost of living around the globe. Toronto is now the top ranking North American city, coming in ninth overall, ahead of New York City in 14th and Montreal in 17th.

Zurich, Geneva, Copenhagen, Oslo and Sydney (Australia) are the top five wage earners this year. New York City tops the North American list in seventh place overall, with Toronto and Montreal in 14th and 15th place respectively.
