Ottawa would be the last serious team in the race for Linus Ullmark

There was some movement among NHL goaltenders on Wednesday. Jacob Markstrom and Darcy Kuemper switched addresses, taking the Devils and Kings out of the race for a goaltender.

This does the Ottawa Senators a world of good, making them the last serious team in the race for Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark.

This is what Bruce Garrioch reports in an article published in the Ottawa Citizen.

If the Senators manage to get their hands on Ullmark, the goaltender’s position would be guaranteed for a few more years, as the Senators have struggled with their last few goaltenders.

Matt Murray, Cam Talbot, Joonas Korpisalo and Anton Forsberg have all tried to establish themselves in front of the Ottawa cage, but nothing has worked.

The problem for the Senators is that they’ll have to pay dearly to acquire the 2022-23 Vézina Trophy winner.

According to Garrioch’s sources, Ottawa would have to offer defenseman Jakob Chychrun, a first-round pick, as well as another draft pick for the Bruins to agree to part with their goaltender.

Ullmark will begin the final year of his contract, worth $5 million on the payroll, in 2024-25. It’s an excellent contract considering what he can bring to a team.

The Bruins’ goaltender will certainly command a more lucrative contract in the summer of 2025, and the Bruins won’t be able to afford his services, as they already have the excellent Jeremy Swayman as their number-one option in front of net.

Still according to Garrioch, the Senators had tried to offer Joonas Korpisalo in a bid for Ullmark at the 2024 trade deadline. Boston reportedly refused, which means that the Senators will have to find another way to get rid of Korpisalo if they get their hands on Ullmark.

Let’s not forget that Senators senior vice-president Dave Poulin confirmed to fans at an event last week that Ottawa would be improving its net situation for next season.

Ottawa fans can’t wait to see if he’s right.
