Paul McCartney to join Machu Picchu celebrations?

Former Beatle may perform concert at centenary celebrations.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of one of the most legendary archeological sites in the world, Machu Picchu, negotiations are underway between the Peruvian authorities and the former Beatle Paul McCartney.

A few years ago, McCartney confirmed that he had no intention of giving hundreds of concerts, preferring to combine his visits with historical events, as he did for the 400-year anniversary of the founding of the Quebec City, July 20, 2008 on the Plains of Abraham.

If ongoing negotiations are successful, McCartney, 68, will play the Monumental Stadium in Lima, Peru sometime near the end of May this year. The English musician, singer-songwriter and composer, formerly of The Beatles and Wings, is considered the most commercially successful songwriter in the history of pop music, according to Guinness World Records.

Known to locals, the site of Machu Picchu was brought to international attention in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham. ‘The Lost City of the Incas,’ as it is often referred to, is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new seven wonders of the world.
