PepsiCo is becoming healthier

PepsiCo wants to cut the salt, sugar and fat levels in its products.

The U.S. company PepsiCo wants to offer healthier choices to consumers.

The company, which manufactures soft drinks including Pepsi and Frito-Lay potato chips, announced this week that it would decrease the salt by 25% in its products within five years. Within 10 years, PepsiCo will also reduce added sugars  by 25% and the amount of saturated fat by 15%.

The company has also chosen to add fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products to its product line.

Several manufacturers are now making this decision because the industry has been under increasing pressure from consumers and governments to bring less harmful products to market.

The Kraft Foods company has promised to reduce by 10% over two years the amount of salt in its flagship products. ConAgra Foods and Campbell Soup have also begun the process.

It helps that the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, is dedicated to a national campaign against obesity among young people. She is pressuring food giants to reduce the fat, salt and sugar found in their food.

In 2006, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola promised to stop selling soft drinks in U.S. schools.
