Peter Jackson to Make Mortal Engines

The series of novels called Mortal Engines has piqued the interest of filmmaker Peter Jackson.

According to the New Zealand paper, the Dominion Post, the director is hoping to bring the Philip Reeve books to the silver screen.

The series features four science/fiction novels.  The story takes place in an apocalyptic world where cities have become mobile and are forced to devour other cities in order to survive.

The Weta Workshop is developing the project into film.  Although Jackson’s rep denied the story, he added that any comments on the project should come from the filmmaker himself.

Jackson has been busy working with Guillermo del Toro on screenplays for two Hobbit films planned for 2011 and 2012.  He is also serving as an executive director, while del Toro will direct the two projects.

The filmmaker is also working on the trilogy of Tintin films with Steven Spielberg.  The first instalment, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, opens in theatres on December 23, 2011.  The second film, The Adventures of Tintin: Red Rackham’s Treasure, is slated for a 2012 release.

In the meantime, you can watch the director’s work in action in the film The Lovely Bones.  The movie, starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon, opens on January 15.
