Phil Collins is honoured

Phil Collins will receive the Johnny Mercer Award.

According to Variety, singer Phil Collins will receive the Johnny Mercer Award at the upcoming Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony on June 17 at New York’s Marriott Marquis.

Collins is a multi-faceted artist. The singer, producer, drummer, composer and actor started his career as the lead singer of British group Genesis in the mid-1970s. He then embarked on an incredibly successful solo career.

He wrote such hits as In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds and Two Hearts. The 59-year old also composed songs for Disney’s animated film Tarzan. You’ll Be In My Heart won him a Golden Globe award in 1999. He has appeared on the big screen in such films as Tommy and Hook.

Phil Collins joins a superstar list of artists who have previously won the Johnny Mercer Award, including Paul Anka, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Carole King, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Cy Coleman and Frank Sinatra.

Leonard Cohen, David Foster, Jackie DeShannon, Johnny Mandel and members of the group Earth, Wind & Fire will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at this year’s ceremony.
