Player of the week: Lane Hutson continues to rack up the honours

Since the start of the campaign, Lane Hutson has performed like the Lane Hutson we know.

After breaking all records in his first season in the NCAA, the Montreal Canadiens prospect is continuing his momentum now that he has a little more experience at university level.

As much as Lane would like to say he doesn’t know if he’ll make the jump to the pros at the end of this campaign… But with his performance, it’s hard to believe he still has a lot to learn in the NCAA.

The diminutive defenseman scored a hat trick on Saturday in his club’s loss… And all three of his goals came before the second period was even over.

Not surprisingly, he was named Player of the Week in his conference. This is the second time this season alone that he has been honoured:

Lane Hutson has been racking up individual honors like nobody’s business since he entered college.

Player and Rookie of the Week nominations, Player of the Month, Hobey Baker Trophy finalist in his first NCAA season…

The list is so long that it’s virtually impossible to name every one of his achievements:

We’re talking about a special player… And we’re talking about a steal for the Montreal Canadiens, who managed to select him in the late second round of the 2022 draft.

So much the better, we agree.

The Habs have a good one on their hands, and it will be interesting to see the club’s approach to his development when he’s ready to make the jump to the pros.

That said, the way he’s going, you’d think he could go straight into the Habs’ line-up without having to go through the AHL… A bit like Guhle did in his first NHL season.

Because yes, Lane Hutson is that good.

In terms of natural talent, there’s no doubt. He’s also improved defensively (according to his coach), which could help him succeed quickly in the big leagues.

There’s a certain amount of adjustment for NCAA players when they arrive in the NHL, and it will be interesting to see how Lane Hutson fares in this respect.

One thing is clear, though. Hutson has what it takes to be a good defenseman in the league, even with his small stature.

At least, that’s exactly what we’ve come to believe when we’ve seen him play since he joined the CH organization.

– Hum.

– Nice collection.

– Well-deserved.
