Popeye is back in 3D

The famous spinach-loving sailor is heading back to the big screen in 3D.

Variety reports that one of the most famous sailors in the world, Popeye, is coming back to the big screen.

This time around, Sony Pictures will offer fans a new 3D version produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man).

Negotiations are underway with screenwriter Mike Jones (Even Hand) to adapt the script and direct the movie.

Jones says, "I’m an unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan. Introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him."

Details of the story are hush hush for now but we can assume that Popeye will be surrounded by Olive Oyl, Brutus and Mimosa.

Robin Williams played the spinach-eating sailor in a 1980 film. This was the last big-screen adaptation.

Popeye was created by E. C. Segar in 1929. He first appeared in a comic strip called The Timble Theatre before getting becoming the star of his own story. Since then, thousands of Popeye-themed products are sold every year, generating more than $1.5 million US annually.
