Powerplay : Patrik Laine a goal away from the top of the NHL

Patrik Laine experienced a rollercoaster season.

It started with his injury and two months later than everyone else, he returned to the game. And from there, he put himself in a position to receive the keys to the city because things were going so well for him.

In December, his contribution was incredible.

Then, it calmed down. The weeks leading up to the four-nation showdown were not exactly simple for him – and even when he returned, it was not always obvious.

His story of “flu symptoms” did not help him.

But in the world of hockey, things can change quickly. And right now, we see it since his return to the game, in Seattle, Laine has started doing what he does best: scoring often on the powerplay. #FrappeurDeChoix

He has three goals in four games since his return – and all three are with a man advantage.

Obviously, he is there for that. Seeing him score is good news because often, these are important goals in games. And it’s also good news because it shows he’s confident.

It’s felt in the rest of his game. And over the last three games, he has at least 15 minutes of time on the ice within a trio (Alex Newhook and Joshua Roy) that works well.

In fact, as Eric Engels pointed out, Laine’s three powerplay goals in four games mean he now has 14 this season. The league leaders, who have played about 30 more games than him, are at #5. #Guentzel #Draisaitl

Yesterday, Laine took a stick to the face and came back into the game. On Tuesday, he shot so hard at the goalie early in the game that the goalie lost his stick, opening the door for Christian Dvorak’s goal.

Will it continue like this? No idea. But right now, that’s all we’re asking of him: score and don’t put his team in trouble. He did it in overtime in New York, but that should not happen too often.
