Prince Harry breaks toe ahead of South Pole trek

Prince Harry’s South Pole trek for the Walking With The Wounded charity may be in jeopardy after he broke his toe.

Prince Harry’s South Pole trek may be in jeopardy after he broke his toe.

The royal is set to undertake a grueling 208-mile race in temperatures as low as minus 40C with the Walking With The Wounded charity, but after fracturing his toe, doctors may rule him out from the trip.

A source told The Sun newspaper: ”Harry’s battling against the clock. He is raring to start and doesn’t even want to think about not taking part.”

Doctor Carol Cooper said it would be a matter of looking at how badly damaged the prince’s foot is, possibly with an X-ray, and working out if he will be able to handle 12 hour days of skiing through blistering cold.

She said: ”You really have to look after your feet in those conditions. You know he won’t give up lightly on this.”

A spokesperson for Kensington palace said last night the trek is ”still very much on” at the moment.

Harry will be joined on the expedition by Captain Ibrar Ali, 36, who lost an arm in Iraq, and Major Kate Philp, 35, who lost her left leg in a blast in Afghanistan.

In preparation for the race, Harry and his team recently spent 24 hours sleeping in a freezing cold chamber at a temperature of minus 35C, where they practiced putting up tents and hiking through blizzard winds, in a bid to make sure they’re mentally ready for the challenge ahead.

Harry and his team hope to raise £2 million for charity through their trek.
